Creamy Avocado Salsa Verde

The origins of salsa verde trace back to Mexico, where it has been a staple in Mexican cuisine for centuries. Traditionally made with tomatillos, chili peppers, and cilantro, salsa verde has evolved over time, with variations emerging to suit different tastes and ingredients available. The incorporation of avocados and sour cream into salsa verde is a modern twist, blending beloved elements of Mexican culinary heritage. This fusion not only enhances the nutritional profile, adding healthy fats and vitamins from the avocado, but also creates a richer, creamier texture that has gained popularity in kitchens worldwide.

This versatile salsa pairs wonderfully with a variety of foods, enhancing both traditional and contemporary dishes. It’s an ideal topping for tacos, burritos, and nachos, adding a creamy, tangy twist that complements the rich, savory fillings. It’s also a fantastic dip for tortilla chips or fresh vegetables, making it a perfect appetizer for parties and gatherings. Additionally, Creamy Avocado Salsa Verde can be used as a dressing for salads, a spread for sandwiches, or even a sauce for grilled meats and seafood, showcasing its adaptability and wide appeal.

This is a no-cook recipe, opting to use premade salsa verde (I like to buy the Herdez brand) to be able to blend all the ingredients together quickly and be done! If you want to take the long route you can buy several fresh tomatillos, peel and wash them, cut them into quarters and roast under your broiler. I would do the same with an onion, and a jalapeno or two. Let them cool, then add them in your blender.

This recipe only has 3 required ingredients, the (tomatillo) salsa verde, sour cream, and avocados! That’s it!

However, if you want to spice things up you can add in a fresh jalapeno (and optionally remove the seeds if you want to cut the heat some). Adding some fresh cilantro always enhances the flavor. You could also add a couple cloves of fresh garlic, or alternatively 1/2 tsp of garlic powder. Other spices that would go well would be ground cumin, chili powder, or even plain old ground black pepper. Finally, you can add some lime juice if you want to brighten up the flavor.

The salsa will thicken some as it chills in the refrigerator, however if you feel it is not creamy / thick enough you can add in a little extra sour cream. If it’s too creamy / thick you can add in some more salsa (or water).

Equipment

  • Blender or food processor
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Ingredients

  • 2 cups tomatillo salsa (I like Herdez brand)
  • ½ cup sour cream (Can substitute Greek yogurt)
  • 2 avocados
  • 1 fresh jalapeno (Optional, Remove seeds for less heat)
  • ½ cup fresh cilantro (Optional, just use a good bunch worth)
  • 2 tsp lime juice (Optional)

Instructions

  • Add all of the ingredients to a blender or food processor and puree.
  • Chill for at least an hour. Serve with tortilla chips for dipping, or serve with your favorite Mexican dish.

Notes

If you want to make it all from scratch, you can use fresh tomatillos instead of premade salsa. Simply use enough to make a couple cups worth, approximately 4 good sized ones. Peel off the husk, cut into chunks, and roast under your broiler until they have a little char. You can also roast a peeled onion and jalapeno at the same time to give them extra flavor.
If the dip is not creamy enough, add a little more sour cream.
If it’s too thick, add a little more salsa (or water if you don’t have any more salsa).
